The Scottish Fold breed originated in 1961 from a single barn cat named Susie found on a farm near Coupar Angus, Scotland. Susie had unusual folded ears caused by a natural dominant gene mutation affecting cartilage. A local farmer, William Ross, began breeding from Susie's offspring, and the breed was officially recognized in the UK in 1966. However, concerns about ear infections and genetic issues led the UK's Governing Council of the Cat Fancy to suspend registrations in 1971. The breed thrived in the United States, where it was developed with careful outcrossing programs.
