Rottweilers descend from Roman drover dogs that herded cattle and pulled carts for legions marching across Europe. The breed became established in the German town of Rottweil, where butchers used them to pull carts of meat and guard money pouches. Known as "Rottweiler Metzgerhund," they nearly went extinct in the 1800s before being revived for police and military work.
