Goldfish (Carassius auratus) were among the first domesticated fish, originating from wild Prussian carp in China over 1,000 years ago. During the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), Chinese farmers noticed a natural color mutation from silver to gold and began selectively breeding them. Initially, only the Imperial family could keep goldfish β commoners were forbidden from owning them. The fish spread to Japan in the 16th century and to Europe in the 17th century. Today there are over 300 recognized goldfish varieties, from the common feeder fish to elaborate Orandas and Ryukins.
