African Grey Parrots are native to the dense rainforests of West and Central Africa. They have been known to Europeans since the 15th century when Portuguese sailors brought them to the continent. King Henry VIII reportedly owned an African Grey. The species gained worldwide fame when a Grey named Alex, studied by Dr. Irene Pepperberg at Harvard, demonstrated cognitive abilities comparable to a 5-year-old human child, including understanding of numbers, colors, shapes, and the concept of "zero." Alex's research revolutionized our understanding of avian intelligence.
